District 97 is feeling the heat from a few Oak Park parents upset about their kids sitting in what they describe as boiling hot classrooms in the last few days. Today's (Sept. 10) heat topped nearly 100 degrees.
In a recent talk withOak Parkand River Forest High School Principal Nate Rouse about security matters at the campus, he explained the portal-to-portal, or nexus, concept schools utilize—that is, what a student does from the time he or she lives home to the school and back.
As they have each year since 1942, Maywood, our neighbor directly west of River Forest, along with the Maywood Bataan Day Organization, will mark Maywood Bataan Day on the second Sunday of September. That's this Sunday, Sept. 8 at 3 p.m. in Maywood's Veterans Memorial Park, corner of First Avenue and Oak Street.
Oak Parkers should check their mailboxes soon to see if they were chosen to take part in the resident survey the village is conducting to "gauge citizen views on a wide range of community aspects and issues."
Tom Miller recently contacted the Oak Park-River Forest Food Pantry to let them know he would be making a large donation. Miller, an Oak Park resident, owns a farm in Michigan. He had an extra field this growing season and rather than letting it go to waste, planted a crop of potatoes specifically to donate to the pantry.
