Most of us are upset by what happened at the Sikh center in Oak Creek, WI. Because of the turbans Sikh men wear, they are easy targets for people who believe in white superiority. They have earned my respect because they are not ashamed of what they believe.
Some commentators insist that much of the anti-Obama rhetoric out there is rooted in racism. I don't doubt that some of it is and that racism is still an issue in me as an individual and in our society. Yet, the more I relate to Africans and middle class African-Americans and see how they are able to function in our society, the more I believe that one's culture is even more important than the color of your skin. This posting is a story about my experience with one African family.
