For nearly 35 years, Charlie Meyerson has delivered news of the day to Chicago-area residents. This fall, he is sharing his experiences and craft as a reporter, writer, web producer, newscaster and news director with communication and journalism students at Roosevelt University.
"My goal is to make sure the next generation of media professionals understands working in the news media isn't just about writing articles," said Meyerson, an Oak Park resident who spent almost 13 years at Tribune Co., including time as news director, anchor, reporter and program host with WGN Radio in Chicago.
"Today's news professionals have to be able to communicate around the clock on Twitter, Facebook and in blogs, while also filing more traditional longer articles," said Meyerson, who was instrumental in helping design and produce the Chicago Tribune's news web sites and who also launched the newspaper's first blog and email service, Daywatch.
A recipient of multiple Lisagor awards from the Chicago Headline Club as well as national and regional awards from the Associated Press, United Press International and other media organizations, Meyerson has been recognized for public service, business, deadline, documentary, feature and investigative reporting and has been part of teams recognized for best newscast and best news website.
Meyerson was at Tribune Co. from 1998 through 2011, most recently overseeing the news operation at WGN Radio. Previously, he had been senior producer at chicagotribune.com. He also has held various posts in news departments at Chicago radio stations WXRT and WNUA and has worked for suburban news organizations including Wednesday Journal in Oak Park, WMRO-AM/WAUR-FM in Aurora and the Star Newspapers chain. Most recently, Meyerson was Chicago bureau chief and senior correspondent for 101.1 FM News, which recently switched to a music-based format.
He joins Roosevelt as an adjunct instructor teaching a course in News Reporting for the fall semester, which began on Aug. 24.
"Charlie Meyerson brings a wealth of experience, talent and insight to our program and to our students," said Marian Azzaro, chair of the Department of Communication at Roosevelt. "We know he can best inform and help our students to be well prepared for the challenges of today's fast-changing and increasingly complex integrated media market," she said.
Offering bachelor's degree training in journalism, integrated marketing communications and communications and master's degree training in journalism and integrated marketing communications, Roosevelt University's Department of Communication has a number of noted faculty members including veteran journalist Charles Madigan, a long-time correspondent and former editor of the Chicago Tribune's Perspective section, and John Fountain, who is an award-winning columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times and a former writer and reporter with the New York Times and the Chicago Tribune.
