As they have each year since 1942, Maywood, our neighbor directly west of River Forest, along with the Maywood Bataan Day Organization, will mark Maywood Bataan Day on the second Sunday of September. That's this Sunday, Sept. 8 at 3 p.m. in Maywood's Veterans Memorial Park, corner of First Avenue and Oak Street.
The Bataan Death March is one of the more remarkable tales of endurance and courage coming out of World War II. A number of Maywood National Guardsmen were serving in the Philippines when the Japanese captured and imprisoned the survivors of the infamous march.
These days the memorial service encompasses veterans from all wars and includes participation from the Filipino-American community in honor of the many Filipinos who lost their lives defending their country with the Americans.
