Registration for the Pleasant District Family Triathlon has doubled since the inaugural event in 2012.

Slated for Sunday, Sept. 29, the event will have participants swimming, biking, and running through the Pleasant District beginning at 7 a.m.

Similar to last year, the event will begin with a swim at the West Cook YMCA, transition to cycling around the perimeter of the business district and finish with a run on Marion Street between Randolph and South Boulevard. Athletes will compete in teams of two and will range in age, some as young as 7 years old.

While registration has already closed, there are still ways to get involved with this year's triathlon. Volunteers are still needed to help set up and facilitate the event. All volunteers will receive a free T-shirt as well as a catered brunch afterwards.

Visit the Greenline Wheels website (www.greenlinewheels.com) to sign up to volunteer. For those unable to volunteer, you are invited to cheer. Viewers can bring cowbells, whistles and megaphones to energize the participants from the sidelines.

As the biking portion of the event will take place on the streets bordering the Pleasant District, there are added safety and traffic considerations. Streets around the business district will be closed or partially closed for the duration of the event. Residents and visitors of the district are encouraged to note street closures signs when parking their cars Saturday night, Sept. 28.

The triathlon isn't the only kid-friendly event going on in the district on Sunday. After the triathlon is over, families are invited to head to Pleasant Home, 217 Home Ave. From 1- to 3 p.m., Pleasant Home will host its annual Children's Day.
