Fruit pie, cream pie, chocolate pie—there are so many types of pies to bake, and eat! All types of pie are welcome at our 4th Annual Pie Off! I love to bake, and some friendly competition among bakers is always good fun, so I'll be putting a lot of thought into what type of pie to bake. I can bring more than one pie and there is more pie to go around if I do, but as a participant in the bake-off, I can only submit one pie for judging.

I love Pinterest as source of inspiration, and I will be visiting Oak Park Public Library's Pinterest board for "Cooking Fun Times." The library, of course, also has lots of cookbooks on baking, like "Pie it Forward: Pies, Tarts, Tortes, Galettes, and Other Pastries Reinvented" by Gesine Bullock-Prado, or "How to Build a Better Pie: Sweet and Savory Recipes for Flaky Crusts, Toppers, and Everything in Between" by Millicent Souris. Books on pie can be found at any library location with the call number 641.8652.

Even better than pie is the opportunity to meet and hang out with fellow bakers. I could certainly use tips on creating the perfect pie crust before the holidays get here! We'll be sharing pictures of all the tasty treats and talented bakers on Instagram and Facebook, and of course encourage everyone else to do the same! The hashtag for the event will be #PieOff2014.

Whatever type of pie you bring, I hope you'll join us for this tasty event at the Main Library at 1 pm on Saturday, Sept. 27. See you there!

Pie Off! is a baking contest open to bakers of all skill levels. Bakers and their pies should arrive by 1 pm for judging. Doors open to the public at 2:30 pm for a tasting of the entries while slices last. Judges will rate each pie on taste, appearance, and creativity, and prizes will be awarded for Best Taste, Best Appearance, and Best Overall. Registration for bakers starts Monday, Aug. 25.
