Have you ever watched Masterchef, Iron Chef or Chopped, those amateur cooking challenges on TV? No need to turn on the tube to catch the latest in culinary challenges because we have our very own: Effortless Eater Kid's Cook-off! This event brought kids from ages 5 to 9 out on a rainy August day to Dominican University’s Jay W. & Doris K. Christopher Nutrition Science Center for some seriously fun competition!
These budding culinary talents had one intention - to show off their skills in the kitchen!
Skills and enthusiasm they displayed. Bernard Jean-Simon, dad of contestant Emelie Jean-Simon, reported, “My daughter left the house a bit nervous but when she came home she had a new light of excitement for cooking; this was a great event!”
First place winner, Nicholas Rosenbaum, wowed the judges with Ahi Tuna Poke topped with a micro green and Hearts of Palm salad in a white miso butter vinaigrette garnished with avocado, tobiko, micro shiso and enoki mushrooms. Pretty impressive fare! When Nicholas was asked how he felt while creating the winning dish, he replied, “I was really confident and stayed focused while preparing my meal.”
Effortless Eater Kid’s Cook-off is the brainchild of Angela Douge MPH, RD, LDN, who has taken her love of cooking and turned it into a community kid-friendly event! Why is she so passionate about kids creating in the kitchen? “Cooking with my son has shown me another way to make life long memorable moments, which I believe will be valuable to his health in life.”
Douge plans on making this competition an annual event so get busy with your child - mixing, beating, experimenting, and honing that special receipe in the kitchen, but more importantlly, making delicious life long memories!
