Blake Sercye announced his candidacy for 1st District Cook County Commissioner on Aug. 17 at Sankofa, a community center located in the Austin neighborhood at 5820 W. Chicago Ave. Born and raised in the Austin neighborhood Sercye graduated from Fenwick High School in Oak Park and St. John Lutheran Grammar School in Forest Park. He still resides in Austin. An attorney, he maintains an active pro bono practice involving fair housing and prisoners' rights litigation. He volunteers as the chair of the legal redress committee of the West Side Branch of the NAACP, a leadership position that allows him to help single-parent mothers and victims of employment discrimination receive legal assistance. Before entering private practice, Blake helped rehabilitated residents of our district get jobs by handling sealing and expungement matters. He earned his law degree from the University of Chicago and his bachelor's degree with honors from Princeton University. The First District includes parts of Chicago's West Side and all or parts of the neighboring suburbs Oak Park, Forest Park, Maywood, Bellwood, Broadview, Westchester, Hillside, and North Riverside.
