Wednesday Journal publisher Dan Haley was among the hundreds of hungry patrons supporting Austin restaurant Surf's Up on July 26.
The Saturday sales drive event was sponsored by Austin African American Business Networking Association. The organization's Black Economic Empowerment Rally (BEER) targets West Side businesses to jumpstart sales and bring out costumers.
Saturday's event at Surf's Up, 5815 W. Madison, was the second BEER initiative this year, the first targeting a black-owned Subway at Lake and Pulaski in West Garfield Park. As of Monday, the Surf's Up event netted nearly $2,000 in 2 hours, according to Crawford. Haley bought a shrimp dinner and says it was "pretty darn good."
