Some questions on reading Dr. Gevinson's commencement-address diagnosis . . .

. . . of what ails or used to ail Oak Park

. . . as delivered at Oak Park Stadium June 1:

1. If Oak Park in 1978 was the most conservative place he had lived in, where else had he lived?

2. If segregation and parochialism were bad then, why is it good for black students to have special programs now that encourage segregation and parochialism?

3. If a few incredibly, obscenely, super-wealthy Americans are trying  to distort, pervert, corrupt, and purchase the political system, what is the maximum one may be allowed before he can be identified as one who may try to distort, pervert, corrupt, and purchase the political system?

4. If a student listening to all voices decides he likes Fox News more than the New York Times, then what?

5. If a student decides to become a Republican, join the Tea Party movement, and enlist in the U.S. Army Special Forces so he can kill enemies of our country, can he or she ever be considered for a Tradition of Excellence award?

Teaching moment -- my graduating daughter and my 13-year-old son now know that even "liberals" can be bigots. Thank you, Dr. Gevinson.

A worthless speech that did nothing but leave students with a one sided slanted view of the world - and left many scratching their head. NOT an uplifting message that one would expect at a commencement. Mind you MOST students do not remember either way -- but it is for the families and parents of those in attendance. At he very least he should apologize and possibly offer to resign.

"Maximum" should, I believe, be "minimum" in the sentence "If a few incredibly, obscenely, super-wealthy Americans are trying to distort, pervert, corrupt, and purchase the political system, what is the maximum one may be allowed before he can be identified as one who may try to distort, pervert, corrupt, and purchase the political system?"

Number 5, after the word country and the comma, the words " so Dr. Gevinson and anyone else may speak free" should be inserted.

George Saunders, the author of The Brain Head Megaphone, and one of the country's great writers, suggests that the best commencement speech is one that goes viral with the audience, viewer, and reader. He goes on to say that occurs most when the speech validates something the audience already knows. His final thought on commencement is that what he regrets most in his life are "failure of kindness." I post this to give 2015 Commencement Candidates a head start.

Thank You, Jim

I too, am awaiting those answers, along with Gevinson's resignation. Anybody who preaches politics like that at a high school graduation need not represent the district any longer.

Excellent questions all, Mr. Bowman. We eagerly await Dr. Gevinson's retort...........crickets.
