Free youth employment skills workshops offered
Oak Parkers ages 14 - 17 interested in learning skills and techniques that can help them find and keep a job are invited to participate in a free youth employment skills workshop series presented by the Community Relations Department. The workshop will be held from 3 - 6:15 p.m., Aug. 5 - 9, in the Veteran's Room at the Oak Park Public Library, 834 Lake St. Deadline to register is Wed., July 31. The workshop will focus on developing self-confidence, personal development, conflict resolution, goal setting and goal achievement. Participants also will learn about successful job interviewing techniques and proper resume writing, as well as employer expectations and proper attire. Click here to enroll online. Nominations sought for Historic Preservation Awards
Nominations for the 2013 Historic Preservation Awards Program are now being sought. August 30 is the deadline for nominations. Single-family residences, apartment buildings, commercial buildings, public/institutional buildings and religious structures may be nominated in the categories of restoration, rehabilitation, adaptive use and additions/new construction. Awards also are presented for stewardship, detail and design. Nominations need not be in an historic district, but projects should have been created within the past five years and located within the Village. Interior work also may be considered in conjunction with exterior work. Applicants also are being sought for a joint award that addresses both historic preservation and sustainable design issues. Report smoking violations
Smoking is prohibited by state and local laws in virtually all public and work places, including offices, theaters, museums, libraries, educational institutions, schools, commercial establishments, enclosed shopping centers, retail stores, restaurants, bars, private clubs and gaming facilities. Anyone observing someone smoking in an enclosed public location in Oak Park is urged to call 708.358.5489 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org. Messages should include information on how to contact the person making the complaint as well as the location where the smoking violation was observed.
