Ascension's school newspaper, "Attention Ascension!" has gone online with its spring edition, published last week.

The newspaper is produced by the 40-member Ascension Newspaper Club, which is composed of students in grades 5 - 8. The club met weekly during lunch throughout the school year.

The latest issue of the newspaper features news articles and photos generated by students, as well as restaurant reviews, an advice column and student-drawn comics. The front page explores a sixth-grade Girl Scout volunteer outing to assist a PADS homeless shelter at St. John Lutheran church in Forest Park.

"The newspaper club is a great way to get middle-school writing experience for students who may want to participate later on a high school paper," said parent volunteer Jean Lotus.

The clubs' special guests included local columnists and reporters, a newspaper publisher, a professional comic artist and a police commander. Mark Brown from the Chicago Sun-Times, Dan Haley and Ken Trainor from the Wednesday Journal, professional comic artist Jenni Crone and Oak Park Police Commander LaDon Reynolds all spoke to students about different facets of the news and journalism.
