Meet Super Hero Rachel Rettberg from Wonder Works Children's Museum !

What does your business do?

Wonder Works serves children from birth through eight and provides an environment where early learning flourishes through our seven thoughtfully designed "experience zones" and educational programming.  Creative, open-ended play is vital for children in the now and for their future.

What is "super" about your business?  Why is it special?

There are a few things! First, creative play changes lives; it promotes brain development at a critical point in a child's life AND helps to set them up for a successful life. Every experience at Wonder Works promotes open-ended play. Second, our team members are amazing! Being a non-profit means that we are often stretched for time and resources, but, nevertheless, the team at the museum puts together amazing programming, keeps the space clean and safe AND supports the caregivers and children who visit. Third - we had 74,000 visitors in 2016 and they hail from all walks of life, different socioeconomic backgrounds, race and abilities. We are really proud of our commitment to serving ALL children. And....I have a fourth, we have a fabulous board who work really hard to support our mission - changing lives through creative play.

Tell us a bit about yourself…

I am originally from England and I still love British history, tea and scones. I have three boys - one at each level of school in Oak Park; they keep me busy. I love yoga, cooking, gardening...anything that feeds the soul. I am a board member of A House In Austin - a wonderful non-profit committed to families of young children.

If you could pick a superpower, what would it be?

I would pick the Power of Equity.  If we could give everyone the same opportunities, we would have such a rich, safe, creative world.

Why did you choose to invest in our community?

I have lived here with my husband (and 3 boys) for 15 years and I am amazed at what a unique community we have. There are so many opportunities to get involved in the community, to improve it and help people feel more connected. I have found wonderful friends, colleagues and opportunities here!

What local organizations have you been able to support in the past?

We partner with many local organizations who serve children and families. We are really proud of those partnerships because they really help enrich the lives of children and families, not just in OP/RF/FP but also in the other surrounding communities. It really does take a village (or three or more!).

What's the weirdest thing you sell or offer? Or have there been any odd customer requests?

We get asked to have Happy Hours...with kids. Which, apart from then needing a liquor license and insurance, I am not convinced it would support our mission! It may change lives, but not through creative play!

Name three of your favorite local businesses (besides yourself, of course!)

There are so many . . .and so many support Wonder Works! Personally, myself and my family love anywhere with great breakfast food (Courageous Bakery and George's) and we are big fans of the book shops.
