Janet Barnstable, a 76-year-old former Julian Middle School teacher and Golden Apple award winner, died in a fire at her Addison home on Jan. 23, but her legacy lives on through a group of fifth-grade students at Lincoln Elementary.

Students there earned second place (good for a Silver Award) in the 2017-18 Global Virtual Classroom contest for their website, "You Are You." The students dedicated the prize-winning website to Barnstable.

At the time of her death, Barnstable was a program manager of the Global Virtual Classroom — a "free online educational program to promote communication, collaboration and understanding among students around the world," according to its website.

Along with a plaque, the students received a cash prize that they decided to donate to help more than 10 students in India attend school. The money will also help the students receive uniforms, backpacks and school supplies.
