Fenwick High School won its first sectional championship this spring over the weekend. Whether bass fishing is a sport or not (the Illinois High School Athletic Association classifies it as an "activity"), the Friars finished first in the Skokie Lagoons Sectional of the IHSA Bass Fishing State Tournament.
That's right, Fenwick has a fishing team. Gives new meaning to the nickname "Friars."
Fenwick caught three fish for a total weight of five pounds, nine ounces. The victory clinched a second sectional title in the past three years.
Tim Kisla had a particularly good day in the boat, reeling in a 2-pound, 9-ounce bass. Head coach Peter Lamkin, driver Alex Davis, Ben Kisla, Richard Davis and Kevin Stehlik are the other members of team.
The top three boats at the sectional, Fenwick, Notre Dame and Taft advance to the state finals on May 20-21 at Carlyle Lake downstate (near St. Louis).
Good luck, Fryers, er Friars, and to paraphrase Police Chief Brody in Jaws, here's hoping you'll need a bigger boat at state.
