The Pleasant District will once again be teeming with athletes of all ages the morning of Saturday, September 28h at 7:00am. As the name suggests, the second annual Pleasant District Family Triathlon will take place in and around Oak Park's Pleasant District.
The event is geared towards those looking to try a tri, particularly those who have not previously participated in a triathlon or running event. Similar to last year, the event will begin with a swim at the West Cook YMCA, transition to cycling element, and finish with a run on Marion St. between Randolph and South Blvd. This year's event organizers are proud to announce that the biking portion of the event will take place on the road this year, instead of on stationary bikes. Participants will feel the wind in their hair as they bike around the border of the Pleasant District, a Bike Friendly Business District.
Participants will register and compete in teams of two, consisting of one child (7-15) and one adult (16 +). Only 75 team slots are available, divided into two age groups, 7-10 and 11-15. Registration is taking place at the West Cook YMCA and costs $55.00/team for early birds (Monday, April 15, 2013 – Saturday, June 1, 2013). Costs will go up after June 1, 2013.
"The distances used in the Family Triathlon are condensed and known as a Super Sprint Triathlon," explains Abigail Miller, Race Director and Greenline Wheels' General Manager. "A super sprint is perfect for looking to try a triathlon; it's not an overwhelming goal, yet it is still a significant accomplishment."
7 – 10 & Adult = 100 m swim, 4 k bike, and 1 k run
11 – 15 & Adult = 200 m swim, 8 k bike, and 2 k run
This family friendly triathlon is unique because optional triathlon training is offered for $60.00/team. "We want to help both newcomers and seasoned pros tune-up for the big day," explains Sarah Gulseth, Pleasant District Association Board Member and the West Cook YMCA's Marketing & Communications Coordinator. Ironman and veteran triathlon coach, Kara Brown, has revamped the training program from last year, providing a training strategy for each family. The training package also includes coached weekly group workouts that will practice each of the disciplines. Carla Gini, President of the Pleasant District Association, adds, "Training is an economical add-on and a sure way to increase confidence on race day."
So why not try a tri?!
