CROP is the fund raising arm of Church World Service, an ecumenical umbrella organization founded in 1946 which involves 37 different church communions in an attempt to coordinate members’ resources in the fight against world hunger. The Hunger Walkathon West, the name of the CROP Walk in the area surrounding Oak Park, is planning its 29th walk on May 6 and has raised over $1 million over the last 28 years.
This year 25% of the money raised on the Walk will go to agencies like the Forest Park Food Pantry, West Suburban PADS, the Columbus (Austin Neighborhood) Food Pantry, the Proviso Food Pantry and the Oak Park River Forest Food Pantry.
The majority of the money raised, 75%, goes to combat hunger in other parts of the U.S. and around the world. On its website, Church World Service describes itself as
People reaching out to neighbors in need near and far--not with a hand out, but a hand up. So, if you’re looking to help build a better world—a world where there’s enough for all—you’ve come to the right place!
We’re working with partners in the U.S. and around the world to build interfaith and intercultural coalitions to eradicate hunger and poverty and promote peace and justice. Together, we’re supporting sustainable grassroots development, disaster relief, and refugee assistance.
