Sock hop boogie

Students at Horace Mann Elementary and their parents came togther on a rainy Friday night for a father and daughter sock hop at the school. I had a busy day Friday, and the rain wasn't helping matters. I had a basketball game to cover at the same time in LaGrange so I knew I could only spend a few minutes on this, but I was actually looking forward to the assignment. A father and daughter dance usually provides some nice moments to document.

Of course there was the bubbly enthusiasm of the young girls, decked out in their 60s style outfits. Most fashioned a pair of sunglasses. And there were plenty of dads, and some moms, who played the part as well. Several parents rolled their jeans to show off their white socks, and rolled up their shirt sleeves or greased their hair back. Some went a slightly more conservative route with a simple varsity letter jacket. Others went all out with a full-on Elvis impersonation.

It was funny to witness some of the awkward, cute, shy and hilarious moments. Looked like a good time was had by all!

To add to Kathy's comment, the Boy's Choice Dance at Mann took place in the fall. So everyone got the chance to dance!

To maximize inclusivity shouldn't it be a Girl's AND Boy's Choice dance. But I guess then it would just be a dance. this stuff is tricky!

For the record: the dance at Mann School is NOT a father-daughter dance. Several years ago, the PTO made a conscious decision to change the name to be more inclusive. As you know, not all kids have a Father. It's now known as the Girls Choice dance, i.e. bring any adult of your choice: Mother, Father, Aunt, Uncle, next door neighbor, etc. As you probably noticed, there were actually quite a few women at the dance, many of whom were Moms.
