Winning isn’t everything
God bless Billy Donovan, the basketball coach of the Florida Gators. After losing a game in the NCAA tournament to Louisville, he was interviewed by a TV commentator. When asked what he told his team after blowing an eleven point lead, he said, “I told them that this is life. When you pour your heart and soul into something and you don’t get the results you want, you find out the reasons why you do things. But it hurts.”
He added, “Because of them being great kids, it was great to see them grow and mature, because you don’t get to this point. . .unless you have some substance.”
He added, “This is life.”
I was raised in Wisconsin 35 miles from Green Bay and Lambeau Field where Coach Vince Lombardi said, “Winning isn’t everything. It’s the only thing.”
I’m still a Packer fan but Coach Lombardi was wrong. Character in the end is far more important than winning. In the high stakes, highly competitive world of big time college basketball, Donovan has his head screwed on straight.
