Malachy Schrobilgen will take his running talents up north next fall as the OPRF cross-country and track star has committed to the University of Wisconsin.
The announcement came after the senior finished 26th overall at the 2011 Foot Locker Cross Country Championships National Finals held at Balboa Park in San Diego, Calif., on Saturday. Schrobilgen, who finished third (14:28) at the Class 3A State Cross-country State Meet in November, ran to a time of 15:53 in San Diego.
“Wisconsin is a great fit for him because former OPRF runner Jack Stapleton is there and they train well together,” said OPRF track and field head coach Tim Hasso. Schrobilgen is expected to compete for a state title in the 3200-meter run this spring. “This is a wonderful complement to our program. Malachy has worked hard for this and has certainly earned it. He’s putting himself in a situation where he can focus on his individual goals.”
Schrobilgen is one of two OPRF track and field athletes who have made commitments to Division I colleges. High jumper Carl Heinz has signed with Duke.
