By Dave Coulter
About a month ago I went downtown and paid a visit to the Occupy Chicago protest, then in it’s early days. Since then these assorted movements have spread all over the world. I’m generally in favor of anything that gets people thinking.
I remember when the Tea Party movement got going. I may disagree with many of their points, but I was glad to see that they were, at least, awake and seemingly alert. (I wondered where they were when the Bush family was running up the debt, but that’s another story) My theory is that in general, if people start really paying attention, good things eventually will happen.
Just the other day one of my work pals and I were discussing the Occupy movement. An old friend, his politics and mine are different. We like to kid around with each other, try and set irksome verbal political traps and then laugh at the outcome. We’re wired differently but we both agreed that if more people were working there would be less protests.
People, not street corners, need to be occupied.
I don’t know that Occupying Oak Park is that relevant, but I’m not gonna gripe if someone wants to speak up. I agree with that David Bowie lyric: “and those children that you spit on as they try to change their world…”
There are some serious problems out there. Our leaders locally and nationally seem to be unable to find common ground. After 9-11, by God, the government took action. It was a crisis. Well, for a lot of people this economy is in a crisis. And maybe if enough people raise hell, our incumbents on both sides will get creative and take action.
Here’s a shock. I think that the Occupy crowd could learn some tactics from the Tea Party crowd (and vice versa). I’m pretty sure there would be some disagreements, but maybe not as many as people would imagine. And that, dear readers, would be an occupation I’d like to see.
