The compelling story of how art historians, museum professionals and military personnel worked to protect Europe's cultural treasures and repatriate stolen objects during and after World War II has inspired numerous books and films.

This lecture deals with the complexity of Germany's cultural climate in the 1930s and 1940s in order to explain why the efforts of those associated with The Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives program were so urgently needed.
