The New Year has arrived and along with it Oak Parkers and the rest of the country will soon have a new president in the White House.

The opposition to President-elect Donald J. Trump is beginning to take shape in the form of a community meeting on Sunday, Jan. 15 at 2 p.m. in the Veterans Room of the Oak Park Public Library, 834 Lake St.

The meeting was organized by Oak Park residents Ruth Rankin and her husband Steve Parker. Rankin said in a telephone interview that the meeting will be held in conjunction with similar meetings across the country sponsored by the progressive advocacy organization Moveon.org.

Rankin said the meeting aims to bring together concerned residents to "talk about responding effectively to the Trump presidency."

"This will be an opportunity to find ways to get involved and harness fear and anxiety into action, to affirm shared values of tolerance, social and economic justice, and peace in the global community," Rankin said in an email.

When Hillary Clinton pays $25 million to settle a fraud lawsuit, I just may entertain the possibility of taking you seriously, Ray S.

@ Bruce - The contributers in October are not prone to forgiving payments for favors they will never collect on. I understand the Clinton Foundations are still under FBI investigation and the legal peril still exists. This might be the hammer Trump uses to silence the Dems.

Ray: I would love to see the donations to the Clinton foundation say in October 2016 vs now. Pay to play? Nah!

A bunch of damn fools who have no shame or ethics ruining our country and getting paid well for life to do so..Stalin was referred to as Uncle Joe too..

@ Bill Dwyer - Yet Hillary's sale of the Secretary of State office didn't trouble you one bit. We know that happened and we do not know that what you suppose will happen - You are a bad mouthing hypocrite!

My favorite loony congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee just tried to challenge the certification of the election. The voice of reason came from crazy Joe Biden who told SJL to sit down and be quiet. Then Biden had a protester removed from the gallery. Do those of you who plan disruptions know how childish and un-american you look? Grow up and work to repair the damage of the last 8 years or better yet exert some effort to bring sanity back to our own state. BTW the election was officially certified and Donald J Trump will be our 45th president.

Eva Lynn Ellis, by the time Trump leaves office - in a year, two, three or four if he makes it that long, that lying fraud of a narcissist will have set historic standards for benefitting from the sale of his presidency.

WASHINGTON ?" President-elect Donald J. Trump said in an interview on Friday morning that financing a border wall with taxpayer money would allow the work to begin more quickly.

Maybe there should be a forum on the crisis in Illinois....Recent report states Illinois is only second to New Jersey for residents fleeing this state. We are immune to the news every night on the senseless violence perpetrated in communities where there is no hope! This election is over whatever side your on...wish him to fail or succeed but what you can count on is that this state is failing miserably and that is simply a fact.

" My concern is with his disregard for the truth, or even lack of awareness of the truth "...What is perceived as truth is in the eye of the beholder......I think sometimes negative campaigning, like so much, is in the eye of the beholder, and I don't think we'll ever get rid of it. Peter Jennings

Ray, Trump's deal-making expertise is undeniable, and I agree that it will be a strength at the bargaining table. My concern is with his disregard for the truth, or even lack of awareness of the truth (remember, he seemed unaware in a televised interview that Russia was even in Ukraine, denying such a thing could ever happen), and his temperament (which over 60% of Americans, even those who voted for him, find unsuitable for office). I agree with Glenn Beck that his presidency could be an "extinction-level event" for our Republic. Not whining here; we Americans get the Presidents we deserve.

Ray Simpson

@ David - Left Behind novels - yes but some scary parallels. I am not talking about tough guy talk - I am saying we now have a president elect who will not knuckle under to the Dems just to play nice. If he gives something up he will get something back - art of the deal. Which is foreign territory for the Democrats. I do not fear Trump and Putin getting in bed with one another - They can agree to many mutual national interests. For instance terror, energy, space exploration and immigration. Russia knows our economy is stronger than theirs and if we chose to compete in an arms race we would prevail. They also recognize weakness of leadership and will take every advantage - as would we. Tough politicians are far different than tough savey business minds and we are about to see that difference.

complete drivel!

David Hammond

Posted: January 5th, 2017 2:00 PM

Ray, if that's actually Schumer's position, it's as pointless as GOP's widely reported efforts to block every single action supported by Obama. You know I appreciate your willingness to engage in mature discussion rather than name calling and scatological invective, but doesn't it seem to you that "one world government" is even more likely when the heads of both the USA and Russia are in bed together. And really, I'm familiar with the LaHaye books, but you know, they're just novels; they don't prove anything. About the tough guy talk ?" trading punches, bear rugs, etc. ?" well, tough guys and their tough talk got us into Vietnam and Iraq and a lot of poor guys on both sides died for that kind of unjustified aggression.

When conservatives still think that losing a presidential election by nearly 3 million popular votes means that the "liberal progressive ideology was soundly rejected"... So I'll ask you again: where were all of you America-first unifiers and kumbaya-singers after both of Obama's resounding (both electoral and popular) victories ? I GUARANTEE NONE OF YOU were on WJ preaching unity and respect 4 or 8 years ago, so please spare us your sanctimonious b.s. now--it reeks of hypocrisy. Meanwhile, we have a President-elect who trusts Putin and Assange more than he trusts our own intelligence agencies, but you're all cool with that, right?

Ray Simpson

Posted: January 5th, 2017 1:33 PM

@ David - Progressives intend to progress toward a one world government. You might check out the Tim LeHay series "Left behind" (Books not the movie) Conservatives, on the other hand, are dedicated to promoting American exceptionalism and national pride. Yesterday I saw Sen Schumer state that the only way Democrats would support any Trump initiative would be for him to denounce everything the Republicans stand for. Now, if that isn't un-american I don't know what is. And he has been chosen to be the face and voice of the Democrat party. You guys have no idea of the way Donald Trump will trade punches with you and my bet is on the street fighter. Word is that our incoming Secretary of Defense has a bear rug in his office - it isn't dead it is just afraid to move.

or non-socialist David. And we wonder why Trump was elected...far left smugness which people are done with...perhaps?

The sewer system and flush toilets are considered progressive.infrastructure...you are dismissed to go eat something crappy and tell us all about it.

David Hammond

If those on the Left are "progressive," that would logically make those on the Right "regressive."

The supposed progressive anti-American movement spewing hateful rhetoric and encouraging violent behavior against President Elect of the United Sates of America Donald Trump and everyday Americans and people throughout the world who believe in freedomis is the creation of the free speech-busting goon squad operation directed by supporters of Hillary Clinton and primarily paid for by George Soros funded MoveOn.org and propped up by David Brock at George Soros funded Media Matters for America , and reclusive leftist billionaire Jonathan Lewis a close associate of George Soros. I thought Americans were "Stronger Together?" Or was that just yard sign lingo? We are seeing what happens when a narrow minded bunch of hypocrites don't get their way. The old threat was "I am going out in the back yard and eat worms" and your mother would give in a little bit. This group of hand wringing do-gooders are all upset over things that have not happened yet and will probably not be 10% as bad as they thought. There was an old movie where a guy was looking at a house to buy and an airplane crashed into it. He purchased it on the spot claiming it was "Pre-disastered" Donald Trump isn't even sworn in yet - so give him some slack and see what our country can do when being run by someone with sound business skills.

"Responding to Trump?"The hate for Trump is so great that we now have people torturing special needs people because they somehow saw him as a surrogate for Trump himself. See the CBS report at this link. It will sicken you. http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2017/01/04/four-people-in-custody-after-alleged-kidnapping-torture-is-live-streamed/

Ray: I did not vote for Trump (nor for Hillary either) but I'm with you on this one. Perhaps Mr. Trainor and the Rankins should consider that one way to effectively respond to Trump is by not labelling as the deplorables, half the population that disagree with you; it's not by doubling down on ridiculous failed policies that half the country has rejected; it's not by thinking that Oak Park is the center of the solar system. No, one way to respond is to look in the mirror and ask what is it about the liberal progressive agenda that led to the biggest political upset in our lifetimes?

Ray Simpson

Posted: January 4th, 2017 4:29 PM

Great idea for this group! How about getting 45 signatures on a petition for a "Non binding referendum" on our next ballot. We could once again prove to the world that Oak Park is dedicated to doing something so we don't have to do anything.

Ada Johnson Tikkanen

does this mean I'm going to have to put a bunch of stickers on my window so people don't think I'm racist, homophobic, or anti-Muslim?

Ray Simpson

Importantly, we are American citizens NOT members of any global community! We have a constitution that lays out the rules of the game. We had an election by those very rules and the citizens of the United States picked a president. The election provided a direction for our country and Liberal Progressive Ideology was soundly rejected. The Trump administration will be judged by actual accomplishments and not by how much free stuff you get. To paraphrase Barack Obama - elections have consequences - we won! Donald Trump isn't even in office and you sore losers are planning ways to doom his presidency. That is just UN-american, snivelly sour grapes. I assume that when the author refers to tolerance he does not include any ideas contrary to his own.

How much mobilization occurred when Obama pushed the TPP? I am happy to hear about jobs coming back to America and a POTUS that seems to be all about results instead of a hack mailing it in and financially benefiting from being in office. And starting resource wars. This POTUS seems like a producer. What a breath of fresh air! I didn't vote for the man but I wish him the best in anything he does to improve our country.
