River Forest, IL, January 27, 2014 – The Oak Park – River Forest Chamber of Commerce announced a new scholarship program aimed at recognizing entrepreneurial spirit and business acumen in local students. The $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating high school student and can be used towards post-secondary education tuition.
Board President Tom Van Winkle and Development Director of Tails Humane Society said, "We are delighted to recognize the value of private enterprise with this scholarship. Our communities are built on the foundation of small business and entrepreneurial spirit. It is only fitting that the Chamber encourages that spirit in our youth."
The Young Entrepreneur Award is open to residents of Oak Park and River Forest who are graduating high school in the spring of 2014 and attending college or vocational or technical training in the fall. Applications will be accepted via the Chamber's website starting January 27. The deadline for submitting the online applications and letters of recommendation is midnight, central time on March 15.
A selection committee of Chamber members is in place to review the applications. Chairman of the Scholarship Committee and Country Financial Representative Tony Munno said, "We will be looking for students who have shown evidence of entrepreneurial spirit and initiative by starting their own business, raising capital for a cause or assisting in the creation or expansion of an existing business. We hope one day these young entrepreneurs will contribute to our local economy and one day become Chamber of Commerce members themselves." The committee will announce its decision at the end of April.
