"Force Majeure" (R/120 min) tells the story of a model Swedish family—handsome businessman Tomas; his wife, Ebba; and their two blond, pre-teen children—on a skiing holiday in the French Alps.
During lunch at a mountainside restaurant, an avalanche turns everything upside down. With panicked diners fleeing in all directions, Ebba calls out for her husband as she tries to protect their children. Tomas, however, makes a decision that will shake the family's world to its core. Although the anticipated disaster fails to occur, his marriage now hangs in the balance as he struggles to reclaim his role as family patriarch.
The film won the 2014 Chicago Film Critics Association Award for Best Foreign Language Film and has been nominated for a 2015 Golden Globe Award in the same category.
On the first Tuesday of each month, Lake Theatre presents afternoon and evening screenings of documentary, foreign, art or classic films at 12 p.m. and 7 p.m.
The program includes an advisory board, currently consisting of local residents Bobbie Raymond, Susie Helfrich and Mary Kay O'Grady, along with Shirley Johnson of Classic Cinemas, who collaborate on film selection.
