Berwyn, IL (January 2014) Autre Monde Café & Spirits, 6727 W Roosevelt Road, (autremondecafe.net ) was recognized with the George W. Ashby Award for Business Excellence at the Berwyn Development Corporation's (BDC) Annual Meeting on January 8, 2014. Opened in 2011, this pan-Mediterranean restaurant and bar was an adaptive re-use of a vacant storefront into a new destination restaurant. Autre Monde's list of accolades are many, including their most recent honors as the first Berwyn business to be recognized as a Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand and the first independent Green Seal Certified business in Berwyn. Autre Monde sets itself apart with farm-to-table sourcing and a seasonal menu built around the flavors of Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, Greece and Morocco. The staff provides excellent customer service and the business is known for its generous support for community organizations.

The George W. Ashby Award for Business Excellence is a local honor named after one of Berwyn's distinguished early architects. Mr. Ashby was responsible for the design of every grade school in Berwyn as well as J. Sterling Morton High School. The award is given annually to one Berwyn-based business that presents a professional and favorable image to Berwyn, provides quality goods or services, maintains a visually appealing space, and practices high quality customer service to its patrons. A total of eight businesses were nominated for the award, including Autre Monde Café & Spirits, Bryan Davids Landscaping, Classic Touch Hair Designers, Connie's Family Restaurant & Cocktails, La Lupita Restaurant, Safelite AutoGlass®, Berwyn's Violet Flower Shop and World's Largest Laundromat.

All I have to say is that Autre Monde is awesome. Awesome. I love their cocktails especially - and of course the food is outstanding. The staff is completely laid-back and unpretentious. It is absolutely a destination restaurant, and we love it. Congratulations!

CEO, a destination restaurant- or theater or club or shopping mall- is a place where people go specifically for that restaurant, etc. It has its own attraction, separate from its genre. People who go there for one thing end up becoming familiar with the area and coming back for others. I.e, you don't go to just any night club. People go to FitzGerald's because it's FitzGerald's. Likewise, people go to a destination site like the Lake Theater because its the Lake, and discover Downtown OP.

What is a destination restaurant? If you are going to any restaurant for food, you are, by definition, going to a destination for your food.

I'm in the minority here. I thought this restaurant was full of all the pc buzzwords but didn't think it lived up to the hype.

Congratulations to Christine and John. Autre Monde is one of the best reasons for Chicagoans to leave the city to eat dinner. We're lucky to have them in the neighborhood.
