Reading Between the Lines

Betty White was born in Oak Park in 1922.  She is, of course, famous for her superbowl ad and her appearance on SNL.  She will be in the area on May 7 to sign her memoir If You Ask Me.  Unfortunately for her fans in the western suburbs, the appearance will only be in Skokie at the Barnes & Noble in Old Orchard Center.

When I checked out her bio I was amazed at her accomplishments. I knew that she has been working as an actress for years, but didn't realize that she's also published five books. The literary tradition of Oak Park continues!

Betty lived in the red brick apartment building, 2nd floor, at 218 Pleasant St. in the early 1920s. When she was hot on The Golden Girls in the '80s we contacted her (from the Wed. Journal) about coming to town---that we'd do a "Welcome Home, Betty White" Day. But she said, graciously, that the idea touched but embarrassed her, that she really had no Oak Park memories. She's such a classy old broad, I just love her.
