There's comedy, "Beyond the Fringe", magic, "ENFRASCADA, Fisk University, "Train is Comin", and the legendary, "Night of the Iguana", all on stage at a theater near you.
It opened last week and "Beyond the Fringe" is being hailed as hilarious and as historic as it tells the story of the creators of a new kind of sketch comedy. It's considered a classic and being performed by Oak Park Festival Theatre at the Madison Street Theatre, 1010 W. Madison in Oak Park. If you're looking for a "hoodoo comedy of jarring proportions", come see "ENFRASCADA" in Berwyn at the 16th Street Theater, 6420 16th St. It tells the story of Alicia who is having some life problems and turns to all kinds of magic for her answers. Performances are Thursdays and Fridays at 7:30pm, and on Saturdays at 5pm and 8pm. Tickets and details at www.16thstreettheater.org . Thursday and Friday performances are followed by discussions. On to Fisk University and the story of one man's dreams and efforts to insure its survival. You'll get all his answers at Open Door Rep's performance of "Train is Comin" which opens Wednesday, 4/11 and runs through Sunday, 5/18. The play is an award-winner and tells the story of a white professor in 1870 and his choir of nine freed slaves as they raise money for Fisk. These Fisk Jubilee Singers are credited with the popularity of Negro Spirituals throughout the world. Twenty-eight songs are performed a cappella. Finally, how about a trip to steamy Mexico for a steamy love story? It's "Night of the Iguana", one of Tennessee Williams' most intense dramas, performed at Dominican University, 7900 W. Division in River Forest on Friday, 4/13 - Sunday, 4/15 with Friday and Saturday perfomances at 7:30 and on Sunday at 3pm. Go to http://www.dom.edu/pac for tickets.
